Annual Drag Ball highlights Rainbow Week

Staff Writer

There were a lot of well-dressed guys and gals on campus last week, but you may not have been able to tell which were guys and which were gals. Spring is the time of year in which Spectrum puts on the Drag Ball, an annual event at Hamline that dates back further than most organizers of this year’s show can remember.

Drag Ball 2006 was held on Wednesday, April 26. Forty or so students piled into the Student Center Ballroom to watch this year’s performers. Under the warm glow of the Northern Lights-like ceiling of the ballroom, five students performed six acts for all in attendance. The performers choose songs to lip-synch and dance to and select their own attire.

For almost an hour, these performers entertained the captivated audience with wise cracks, colorful dancing, and music that ranged from AC/DC to Judy Garland. At the end of the night, a winner was chosen in “Night at the Apollo” fashion by the audience as the master of ceremonies gauged the applause for each performer. This year’s victor was Smokey Hamilton who sang Uptown.

The purpose of the show is “to reduce the binariness of gender and to let people experience new things,” said Morgan Stemberger, a major organizer of the event. The event was one of several that occurred as part of Hamline’s Rainbow Week.
