Hamline bands do battle

Staff Writer

If, on April 22, you were in your dorm, it wasn’t an earthquake that knocked the plaster off the walls at 7 p.m. It was HEAT’s annual Battle of the Bands concert.

Five bands with at least one Piper in each competed for first place and its prize of $300. Admission was free and everyone was welcome.

For about an hour and a half, around 60 audience members heard the underground musical stylings of the Hamline music scene.

Each band played a 15 minute set. Last year’s winners, Refuke!, opened. The Robot House Band played second followed by Accelerated Love Affair and Theodore Wolfe and the Heat Death of the Universe. Disposition closed the evening’s sonic stylings.

There was something for everyone at the show, as several different music genres were represented and represented well. Refuke! played a kind of rock/jam/blues that was well received by the audience.

Accelerated Love Affair was the only acoustic band, and the duo played an inspirational set that included stellar harmonies of the singers. The Robot House Band, who had formed only three days prior, still managed a crowd-pleasing set.

Theodore Wolfe and the Heat Death of the Universe took the stage next and they fused folk and funk in their set. Disposition mixed their own brand of grocking with a heavy metal rock cover, playing an elongated set of get-up-and-move metal.

After the judges deliberated for a short while, Accelerated Love Affair went home with the prize money. “Each girl’s voice [of Accelerated Love Affair] complemented one another very well. They sang like a first place band. That’s for damn sure,” said Brad Gausman, lead singer of the Robot House Band.
