Media influences eating disorders
I will admit that I have begun to have an unhealthy romance with television. I began watching incredibly trashy shows on MTV. Though each show has unique a platform, I noticed something very similar. Every girl was probably a size zero.
I did the typical female response. I looked in the mirror and compared my average college body to the flawless women on TV. That’s when I decided I needed to stop watching MTV.
I am well aware that this isn’t a new concept. People look to Hollywood to find the ideal appearance. Eating disorders are also not a new concept. When one is forced to look at the amazingly skinny and flawless women on TV, they can’t help but come up with schemes to be more like their idols.
I say this not as an observer, but as a participant. I began skipping lunch when I was in the 4th grade. By 8th grade, I had become a master at missing meals and claiming I ate somewhere else. By junior year of high school, my weight was in the 90’s. All the while, I had pictures of my favorite celebrities taped to the back of my door, right next to my mirror. Sometimes I would add a model or take one down, depending on whether or not they fit my ever changing “ideal” concept of women. I wanted them there to remind me that if they could do it, so could I.
So perhaps my bitterness at Hollywood is personal. I see the screaming fans of celebrities and I see the girls who have no self esteem. I see the 8 million women and 1 million men affected by eating disorders. Of all mental illnesses, anorexia has the highest mortality rate. I see the women who will die from their affection for Kate Moss
All I ask is that people turn off MTV more often. The “ideal” women of Hollywood are the women who have spent millions of dollars changing themselves. My ideal is being OK with whatever size I am.
