She works hard for the money

Staff Writer

The office of Associate Director of Financial Aid has a striking outlook, as does its occupant, Cheryl Dooley. The large square window lets light onto an otherwise arduous job.

Dooley began at Hamline in the office of Undergraduate Admission 15 years ago. Eight years ago, she transferred to the office of Financial Aid, where she has been working with new and returning undergraduates ever since. When asked what she likes better about her new position, Dooley said, “I see closure a lot faster.” Financial aid has a more grounded standing, and well rooted within the Hamline community. With admissions, “there is a lot of travel involved [which can] get old,” she said.

As an undergraduate college student, Dooley attended Gustavus Adolphus, working in financial aid for four years through her work study. Subsequently, she fulfilled an internship in admissions. It is safe to say Dooley has been exploring her interests for a very long time. In discovering where it is she fits best, Dooley has become very good at what she does.

“I still have student interaction here, which is what I enjoy,” Dooley said. She works with new, returning, and transfer student accounts to award financial aid. Dooley is one of five people in the office of Financial Aid. Dooley said she takes joy in helping people finance their education.

In due course, the Hamline campus has changed tremendously in a physical sense, and in terms of maintenance. Yet Dooley’s coworkers and the students she works with have remained a satisfaction. More than ever, Dooley said she sees “openness and willingness to help” from Hamline students.

“That’s Hamline, diversity of population.”
