New sorority embraces diversity, acceptance

Staff Writer

Donned in sweatshirts with pink lettering, the women of a new sorority are planning to make a name for themselves on campus through activities in the community and at Hamline. Eta Omega Rho, founded this spring, is hoping to flourish and grow at Hamline. As a local sorority, the women hope to involve themselves immensely in the community and on campus, sorority president Laticha Harper.

Along with service, EOR prides itself in its diversity and acceptance.

“There are so many different faces, so many different backgrounds,” said Harper said. The group hopes to continue to become diverse in its members. All of the members do have the desire to serve in the community in common.

The women are committed to getting involved. They are currently working with battered women’s shelters in St. Paul/Minneapolis and with high schools. At the shelter, the women volunteer with those who have fled from abusive relationships.

Along with the community, Harper said they sorority hopes that they can be active on campus, and have events throughout the year. Their first pledge season will be next fall.

The sorority’s main focus is on community service, however. They have been working within the sorority, and also involving themselves with the other sororities. They are hoping to gain an abundance of knowledge in community service so they can continue to grow in involvement.

Becoming an international sorority becomes very expensive, so EOR has chosen to keep the sorority local. They have been in the process of becoming a sorority since the fall; however, they were officially founded this spring by the women who had been working on it all year.

“The girls who started [Eta Omega Rho] were a great group of friends,” said Harper. Founded on strong friendship, the sorority’s current members are mainly those who were involved in the process of creating it. They hope that the upcoming pledge season will bring in more women and amplify the amount of diversity.

The sorority’s mascot is as unique as the sorority itself. The sorority chose the Unisys, which is a mythical crossbreed of a unicorn and a Pegasus.

The sorority has discussed attaining a house. However, that remains a goal for the future.

Mainly, the women wanted to develop a sorority that would suit them. The women wanted a unique sorority that they could shape based on their interests in service. The group hopes that the sorority will be a success and that they can continue to go in a positive path and influence the community. They hope that their sorority can appeal to all types of women with their distinctive goals and ideals.

“All the other sororities are really good; [Eta Omega Rho] just wants to add a different spin.”
