Dean candidates begin on-campus interviews

Editor

Candidates for the two available dean positions began arriving on campus last week as part of the interview process. Three CLA dean and four Graduate School of Management candidates are planned to visit this month.

Michael Vincent, the first of CLA dean candidates, visited campus last Monday and Tuesday March 27-28. Vincent currently serves as the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the American University in Paris (AUP). He has held the deanship at AUP since 2000.

Two more candidates are planned to visit campus soon. Francis Dee Montgomery will visit on April 5-6, and Fernando Delgado will visit the following week on April 12-13.

Montgomery is currently the Associate Dean at the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Missouri-Rolla, a position she has held since 2002. Delgado serves as the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies and Research at Minnesota State University-Mankato. He has served as dean since 2004.

One candidate declined to come to campus. Search committee chair, Professor Dwight Watson, said the committee may consider bringing a fourth candidate. That decision was made last Friday when the committee met. The outcome of that decision was unavailable when the Oracle went to press.

During their stay, the candidates meet with the search committee, the CLA faculty, the president and her staff, the dean’s council, students and other administrators, such as Athletic Director Dan O’Brien.

Watson said the search committee will recommend two candidates from their pool to President Hanson, who will then select the new dean.

“That’s typical of a higher administration decision,” Watson said.

Curriculum vitae of each candidate was obtained, but in the interest of fairness, such information will be reported once the Oracle has interviewed each candidate.

Currently, Garvin Davenport holds the CLA Dean position. Davenport announced his retirement November 10, 2005. His retirement announcement began the CLA dean search, in addition to a separate search for the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs position, which Davenport was appointed to by President Emeritus Larry Osnes. Billy Funk of Korn/Ferry International is managing that search.

Graduate School of Management

Also last week, the first two of four candidates for the GSM dean position visited campus, Search Committee Chair Professor Ken Fox said.

Julian Schuster and Shelley Robbins were the first candidates to arrive. Linda Heilman is scheduled to be on campus April 4. Wayne Cunningham is scheduled to come the following week on April 10. Curriculum vitae for the GSM dean candidates has not been obtained yet.

Each GSM candidate visit will follow a similar agenda when at Hamline, Fox said. Their days will start with breakfast with the search committee, and then they will go through a series of meetings with GSM core and adjunct faculty.

In addition, candidates will meet with President Hanson, Davenport, other members of the president’s staff and other deans, Fox said.

Each candidate will also meet with students from 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. on their respective days, Fox said.

Fox said the committee would meet shortly after all the candidates have visited and make a decision by the end of April.

The selected candidate will replace Interim GSM Dean John Garon. Garon currently serves as Dean of the School of Law. He assumed the deanship after former Interim GSM Dean William Joynes returned to the GSM Faculty.
