Facebook group provokes ACTC rivalry

Staff Writer

Late one night first-years Sean Bibus and Matt Sampson created a Facebook group forming a squad to represent the “domination” of Hamline over all the other schools in the area. Once the group was started, word spread and the squad became, according to Bibus, “the new nationalistic arm of Hamline.” Facebook may not always be the most reliable source of information, but with a little digging, it was found that the Hamline ACTC Domination Squad is not just a fun name for a pointless Facebook group, but an active group started by these two students. “I thought it would be fun to unite with other students in the name of Piper Pride,” Sampson said.

Of the 80 people in the Facebook group only about 20 have shown up at the two ‘raids’ thus far, at St. Thomas and Macalester. A major obstacle larger groups has been writing papers, since the last two raids have taken place at midnight on school nights. To combat that, a daylight raid is being planned for the near future, possibly at Bethel.

There is a ‘don’t do anything permanent’ rule to the raids. Sampson said the activities include things like spying on other schools, putting on red face paint and posting pro-Hamline messages “everywhere they seem fit.” Messages are left in conspicuous places in chalk and flags are sometimes planted. There are no other schools with similar groups yet, which is disappointing to both of the creators, they said. The rivalry will begin when other schools have comparable squads to challenge in amiable competitions of stealth.

The group wants to encourage a little friendly rivalry and have a good time, but don’t think they aren’t serious. “Hamline needs to know that we are the best ACTC school there is. This group defends and administers this belief,” Bibus said.
