U of M frat suspended after hazing allegations
The University of Minnesota’s Farmhouse Fraternity, located at 1505 Cleveland Ave. N. in St. Paul, was suspended on Tuesday, March 28 due to allegations of hazing. Two former members of the fraternity complained to the U’s administration on Feb. 23 and the organization is currently under investigation by the university and is suspended through Spring 2007.
Farmhouse, an agricultural fraternity, has had a chapter on the U’s St. Paul campus since 1931 that had a relatively solid reputation until now. “We are deeply apologetic to both the university and to the Greek world at large,” said Farmhouse President Jeff Reyschmitz. “We realize that this will paint a negative picture of Greek life, and we are most sorry about that.” According to Reyschmitz, Farmhouse will not be allowed to do recruiting through the University, play intramural sports or participate in social events under the Farmhouse name. The details of the allegations are not yet public, but it is known that students lives were placed at risk and that their emotional damage was palpable. No criminal charges have been filed against the fraternity yet, and the organization is cooperating fully with the investigation.
“The hazing ritual was done out of a need to unite incoming members of the organization,” Reyschmitz said. “We definitely can’t haze anymore so we’ll have to think up some other alternatives, maybe a community service project or something.” Variuos U of M administrators said that hazing is rarely a problem on campus and that it is not tolerated at any level.
