Formal debate solidifies campaign platforms
The HUSC formal debates provided a night of quiet determination last Wednesday. The two candidate teams, Mike Pesko/Taylor Seeman and Alex Erickson/Kristin Falde solidified their platforms and further demonstrated their ideological differences as they seek the positions of HUSC President and Vice President for next year. Though they were speaking to a sparse audience of about 25, the candidates were clearly taking the event seriously.
Pointed remarks came early in the debate with the a question about how the teams, both composed of white candidates, would represent students of color. Pesko cited his experience working with the MISA office and attendance of the HUCORE and NCORE conferences while his running mate Seeman also cited her experience at HUCORE and added, “I’ve really been working to educate myself.” The Erickson/Falde team wasted no time in distinguishing their team from Pesko/Seeman’s by stating that their platform would be the one to best benefit students of color.

Tuition increased by average amount
College is not cheap. The price of going to tuition has slowly and surely increased every year since Associate Vice President of Enrollment Management Percy Nelson can remember. But Nelson said that the price of going to Hamline is comparable to, if not less expensive than, going to most other private colleges in Minnesota.
Why the cost of attending college keeps rising is the pressing question. “It is a challenge to communicate why [prices] go up,” Nelson said. Other than the obvious cost of living adjustments each year, the simplest answer would be the goal of keeping Hamline competitive with other similar institutions.
Plants and paint part of plans to revamp Snelling Ave. neighborhood
In front of a small stage that would properly suit a third-grade production of Peter Pan, the Hamline-Midway Coalition (HMC) shared their proposals for area revitalization with the general public that gathered at the Hamline Midway Library last week. Although the group usually meets in the small building at Hamline park on the corner of LaFond and Snelling, tonight’s attendance of roughly 40 people would have been a tight squeeze in the tiny beige building. The bright yellow flyers the group sent out before the meeting last Monday, Feb. 27, surely caught some eyes. “I’m excited that our neighborhood is awakened,” said Everett Jansen, head of the HMC’s environmental arm. “It seems that we’ve been asleep for quite awhile.”

HUSC campaigners lack self respect
A trio of women running for HUSC representative positions have taken campaigning to a new low through superficial advertising. Sarah Elston, Jeana Blomme and Mada Tautges are shown on the same flyer projecting more than just their political ability; two are posed with plunging necklines. Elston and Tauteges’ individual flyers are equally distasteful.
If HUSC campaigning has fallen to this level, could wet T-shirt contests be next? This is not a beauty pageant or a lingerie ad. What is the purpose of pitching promiscuity and sexuality to win a college student government position?

Somewhere Over the Rainbow await anxious, lubed men
My, how I bite my lips in rage at the blatant deception of advertising that speaks to my ever-burgeoning libido. It should be obvious that what you see on posters is never the real deal, but when it comes to all things voyeuristic, one can’t help but hope.
As a young American I am by now conditioned to the fact that my pizza from Dominos looks more like a spliced tumor than it does the sumptuous delicacy on the commercials, or the fact that the gorgeous women that serve as role models for America’s youth sound like the second generation from Stepford.

Three halves make a whole: baseball swings into a new season
“Baseball is 90 percent mental, the other half is physical,” said Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra. Although the numbers don’t make sense, the premise can give the Piper faithful a good feeling on our baseball team. We have the “smarts” part down pat. In fact, since Jason Verdugo joined Hamline as head coach five years ago, his players have been given 19 Academic All-Conference awards and three All-MIAC first team awards. Of course, a team needs some brawn to accompany the brains. In Verdugo’s tenure the Pipers have broken or tied 13 school records, and defeated four ranked opponents.

Under the Covers . . .
Dear Under the Covers,
I am not your typical Hamline University student. I am pregnant and loving it. However, my husband doesn’t want to have sex or pleasure me in any way because he thinks that it will be damaging to me or the baby. Is this true?
