Women take MIAC honors
This season womens basketball made the playoffs for the first time in team history, and though they lost their first post-season match up, the teams work this year has not gone unnoticed. Last week three team members were named to MIAC All-Stars.
Senior forward Laurisa Ewert was named All-MIAC first team for the second time in her Hamline career. She led the team in season scoring, with 14 points per game. She was seventh in the MIAC in scoring and third in rebounding. Earlier last month Ewert was named MIAC Player of the Week.
Senior Carolyn Korchik and junior Kelly Lines each received All-MIAC honorable mention accolades. Korchik, averaged 10.7 ppg and 4.3 rpg during conference play. This year she became Hamline’s fifth all-time leading scoring, with 1,330 career points.
It was the second time in her career she was named All-MIAC honorable mention. As a first-year and a sophomore Korchik was named All-MIAC.
Lines was named All-MIAC honorable mention for the first time. She hit an average of 10.0 ppg and 3.2 rpg. She led the team in assists with 54 on the season.
Mens hoops earns nods
Four Pipers received MIAC basketball honors this season. Jon DeRock and Tony Thrasher both made the All-First-Years team. Thrasher was also named All-MIAC honorable mention along with junior Kyle Foster. Sam Wiener also garnered recognition for his defensive play by making the MIAC All-Defensive team for the second time in his career.
DeRock, who hales from the small town of Buffalo Lake, MN, led the Pipers in scoring this season with 13.7 points per game in 27 games. He was the 10th leading scorer in the conference, fifth in assists, and ranked seventh in steals.
Thrasher, of Hustisford, WI, was Hamline’s second-leading scorer with 12.6 ppg. He sunk almost exactly 50 percent of his shots this season (133-264) making him the most accurate forward in Hamline’s front court.
Foster was fifth in the conference in rebounds (7.9 rpg) and fourth in steals (1.89 spg). The Apple Valley native also tallied 11.8 ppg.
Wiener was eighth in steals during conference play with 1.65 spg.
Under head coach Barry Wohler, the Pipers made the playoffs for the first time in 12 seasons and won their first playoff game since 1985.
Hockey players earn All-MIAC Honors
Last Wednesday, the MIAC conference office announced its All-MIAC honors. Dustin Fulton and Marie Gross earned All-MIAC first-team honors for their stellar play in 2005-06. First time is a charm for Fulton. He was named to the All-MIAC first team in this, his first year of collegiate play. The rookie was also named to the MIAC All-Rookie team. His play contributed to the Pipers seeing a five point improvement in conference games this year.
Fulton, from Brooklyn Park, MN., led the Pipers in scoring with seven goals and 10 assists in league action. For the season, Fulton posted 10 goals and 15 assists. He was also tied for second in the nation in short-handed goals with four.
The Pipers womens hockey team scored nine points in conference games this season, a new Piper record. Sophomore Marie Gross contributed to that record. The West St. Paul native had an excellent season, scoring five goals and six assists from the defense. For the season, Gross had two power-play goals in MIAC games. Gross was the Pipers’ fourth leading scorer and was 11th in the conference of defensemen scoring.
Joe Long of Dayton, MN., had a great first-year also. Long earned All-MIAC honorable mention. He was the Pipers’ second-leading scorer with seven goals and 15 assists overall and four goals and nine assists in conference play.
