HUSC campaigners lack self respect

A trio of women running for HUSC representative positions have taken campaigning to a new low through superficial advertising. Sarah Elston, Jeana Blomme and Mada Tautges are shown on the same flyer projecting more than just their political ability; two are posed with plunging necklines. Elston and Tauteges’ individual flyers are equally distasteful.

If HUSC campaigning has fallen to this level, could wet T-shirt contests be next? This is not a beauty pageant or a lingerie ad. What is the purpose of pitching promiscuity and sexuality to win a college student government position?

Additionally, if students are going to vote based on looks, then such a student does not deserve a vote. What self-respecting woman would support such blatant abuse of a woman’s sexuality?

What happened to credibility and dignity in political advertising? Yes, sex sells, but it should not sell in politics. The use of a woman’s own body as a political tool undermines all of the achievements women in politics have accomplished in the past century. What is the point of campaigning so hard to win the vote if women are losing self-respect sexuality to win a candidacy?

These fliers give women in politics a bad reputation. Other candidates win political positions based on their drive, strength as a leader and experience. Women using their sexuality to get in the pants of politics is demeaning, not to mention an embarrassment to all other women.

What these women are telling us via their campaign flyers is that they are objects. They are posed in a subversive and sexual manner, promoting not their political ability, knowledge or desire to create a better student government, but their desire to please male (or female homosexual) students through their good looks. It saddens us to think that three students who have such potential cannot see anymore worth, decency, or potential in themselves than their sexual prowess.
