Driving any direction in Minneapolis will eventually lead to First Avenue, which features Ghostface Killa of Wu-Tang Clan this Sunday at 8 p.m.
Last Thursday the venue was sold out by the musical stylings Matisyahu, of a Hasidic Jew performing reggae-style hip-hop. Until recently he had been just an underground phenomenon with some press attention, but newfound mainstream attention has made his tickets a lot harder to come by.
Although no plans for hip-hop may not be in the upcoming future, Steven Spielberg is making cultural waves yet again with his highly acclaimed film Munich, for which he is nominated for and Oscar.
The awards this year have provoked resonating dialogue on the issue of homosexuality and alternative lifestyles in mainstream culture. Films such as Brokeback Mountain, Transamerica, and Capote have opened to rave reviews but also a wealth of controversy among audiences and the talk shows alike.
Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC, is spearheading a major overhaul of the British media giant and has laid out the groundwork for his master plan. He said the BBC is at a “critical” point in its 77 year history and warned it is necessary to “save to spend” on the future. Whole swathes of the BBC will be moved out of London in a bid to “reconnect” with parts of the nation that feel “alienated” from its services on TV and radio, he confirmed. (manchesterguardian.co.uk)
American television, on the other hand, is staying with its latest reality TV formula for success. Wednesday brings the final episode of the current run of Project Runway. That same night brings the season premiere of America’s Next Top Model hosted by Tyra Banks. The latest incarnation is the sixth cycle of the UPN ratings magnet.
