Slam dunks make game above .500 even sweeter
The Piper women had a great game against the St. Mary’s Cardinals. ╩Hamline outplayed St. Mary’s from beginning to end. Many of the players had outstanding plays and did very well the entire game. The girls looked crisp and clean throughout their warm up, which was a testament to the hard work they’ve put in all season. The two teams were neck and neck for the first ten minutes, until Hamline was able to break it open with an atypical barrage of offense.
Second year Megan Haugen had several great plays, but perhaps the best was when she was able to cleanly reject what would have been a two pointer for the Cardinals in the first half. Hamline’s defense was tight throughout both halves. Junior Kelly Lines had more than one good defensive play where she was able to knock the ball out of the Piper defensive zone, making it possible for the Pipers to score against the Cardinals. By the end of the first half Hamline was dominating the Cardinals 39 to 28.
Senior Laurisa Ewert had many outstanding plays. She had the most baskets for the Pipers, totaling 21 out of Hamline’s 81 points. At the 17 minute mark in the second half, Ewert crashed hard to the rim in an exciting dunk. Ewert, one of Hamline’s leading scorers this season, was undoubtedly on top of her game. In addition to points, Ewert led the Pipers in steals and assists. Toward the end of the game she made her inside presence felt with key blocks, preventing the Cardinals from surmounting a comeback. Carolyn Korchik scored 20 points with two shots from beyond the arch.
St. Mary’s hit a meager 30 percent of their field goals, a dismal showing compared to the 60 percent field goal percentage of Hamline. The Cardinals tried to strike back in the second half, but, simply put, were unable get the ball through the hoop. Hamline dominated the court, and on a few occasions they even got away from St. Mary’s to throw down some thunderous slam-dunks.
The final score was 81 to 58 in favor of Hamline. The Pipers have won 11 games and lost 10 this season and are fifth in the MIAC standings. They play their next game at home against Bethel on Feb.15. If Hamline loses the game, they will fall to sixth place in the MIAC standings, allowing Bethel to leap frog them and take their current position.
