Democrats, Republicans too similar

Columnist

It should surprise only the naĢve that the Democratic party has caved in by allowing Judge Alito (and Judge Roberts before him) to the Supreme Court. This is proof of something that I have been saying for yearsčthat there is no longer any real difference between the Democratic and Republican parties.

Democrats purport to represent the liberal half of the country, and yet they have worked with Republicans to: gut welfare during the Clinton administration; deregulate much of big business and the economy, also under Clinton (thereby making it possible for Bush to do so much damage); vote overwhelming for the USA PATRIOT Act, despite for the most part never having read its sixty thousand pages or so; pass the No Child Left Behind Act, even though it was obvious it left many, many children behind; and vote to authorize Bush to initiate armed aggression against Iraq (99 to 1 in the Senate, not much better in the House).

Certainly, once the occupation of Iraq became unpopular, Democrats began speak out against it, but where were they before American tanks and warplanes brought democracy to Iraq by destroying it? The standard Democratic alibi is that they were misledčpass the buck, please. This is not even a plausible excuse.

Well before the invasion, it took meča novice who doesn’t have the fate of a sovereign nation resting on my decisionsčall of five minutes of research to discover that all the Bush administration claims were bogus, and another half an hour or so to find multiple sources confirm as much. For example, a 2002 pamphlet consisting of William Rivers Pitt interviewing former U.N. Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter (a staunch Republican who voted for Bush), entitled “War On Iraq: What Team Bush Doesn’t Want You To Know,” contains a large dose of verified information disproving Bush’s claims. It would seem the Democrats were quite eager to accept the official line, ever the faithful lapdogs of the empire.

And now they’ve done it again, goose-stepping in line with the Republicans to confirm Judge Alito, despite his strict conservative views, including strong opposition to abortion. The alibi this time? According to The New York Times (Conservatives See Court Shift As Culmination, Jan. 30, 2006), “No one defended Judge Alito or argued that he did not warrant opposition, [Senator Edward] Kennedy said in an interview. Instead, opponents of the filibuster argued about the political cost of being accused of obstructionism by conservatives.” I think those politicians should worry more about the deluded Democratic voters who put them in office expecting to be represented reasonably well.

Someday, those voters will realize their party has betrayed them wholly and turned Republican. Then they will start voting for Greens or Independents, parties which actually support liberal ideals. However, we still have to put up with Justices Alito and Roberts, along with all the other disastrous policies they’ve enacted or gone along with that have caused untold suffering domestically and abroad. Thanks, Democratic partyčor rather, Republican Lite party.
