A New Search at Hamline
This spring, many upper-management searches are being carried out throughout the university. Specifically, the university is looking for a Dean of the Graduate School of Management, a Dean of the CLA, and a Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Applications for the position VP of Academic Affairs were due Jan. 31 and are being handled by Bill Funk of Korn/Ferry International, a “provider of executive human capital solutions,” the company’s website says. Funk and Korn/Ferry managed the recent presidential search which chose Linda Hanson as Larry Osnes’ successor.
The other two searches are being handled through respective committees. Professor Ken Fox is chairing the committee in search of the Dean of the Graduate School of Management, which is comprised of university faculty members, three community members and School of Law Dean John Garon, as an ex-officio member.
Fox said the position was initially posted through Jan. 20, but the application process remains open. As to press time, the committee has scheduled eight candidates for telephone interviews. Fox said on-campus interviews may take place as early as late February.
Education department chair Professor Dwight Watson is chairing the committee charged with searching for the Dean of the CLA. Various CLA professors have been said to be on the committee.
Between these three positions, one cannot help but wonder where the future of the university lies. Under the Hanson’s leadership, these searches are crucial to the continuance of the university. These positions guide the university and its various colleges. Great care must be taken with each.
And thus we must applaud the administration for the due care it has given to these positions, especially with the VP for Academic and Student Affairs, a grand title for an enormous position, the chief academic officer for the entire university.
We hope the new members to the Hamline community embrace Hanson’s transparency. New ideas will enter our Midway abode, and thus the responsibility rests on the committees and Bill Funk to chose candidates who are dedicated to the university’s mission.
