Radio DJ to replace bands at EOYP
There will not be a band at the End of the Year party (EOYP) this year. HEAT has decided to use the money to bring in a local radio station to DJ the event. Some of the extra funds will also be put toward a wider variety of games and stations. The time and date have also been changed to Friday afternoon/early evening, to incorporate more commuters, faculty and staff.
The theme this year will be “The Great Hamline Get-Together,” taking after the idea of the Minnesota State Fair. Specific events being considered include henna, face paint, clowns, caricatures, inflatables and rides. “Kelly’s all gung-ho about a petting zoo,” HEAT President Kristin Falde said.
The food situation will also be a little different. None of the dining halls will be closed this year. There will be snack items and fair-like food huts at the event.
“We are going to try to make it a community event,” Falde said. “It just didn’t work too well [last year].” HEAT is aiming to create an event that will work well outside, no matter what the weather. Having moved EOYP inside a few times in the past couple of years, they felt the event hasn’t been as much of a success as they would like it to be.
As for the band, Falde admits it is hard to satisfy the Hamline community with one music genre. “You can’t please everyone, obviously,” she said. Also, one band eats up a large chunk of the HEAT budget, which was cut again last year. “We’re ultimately taking money from ‘the band’ that would please a specific amount of people and spreading it around so more people can enjoy it,” Falde said.
“I would love if everyone could be completely happy, but that doesn’t happen...The purpose of HEAT is to provide entertainment and activities for everyone to enjoy on campus,” Falde said. That is precisely what HEAT is working toward with the changes to EOYP this year. They are particularly looking at KDWB and B96 radio stations for the DJ. They are also interested in working with other orgs to co-sponsor different games and booths.
“All the changes that we are making are for the best,” Falde said.
