Basketball women fall to St. Kates in second heartbreak loss of season

Staff Writer

The womens basketball game against St. Catherine last Wednesday, was a replay of the game against Gustavus that took place last week, with another close loss for the Pipers, who were beaten out 75-72.

The Pipers got off to a great start with senior Laurisa Ewert scoring two after the tip-off, soon followed by two from junior Ashlee Sensor. The Wildcats tried to get on the board but were having troubles with shooting, leaving Ewert and Senser to take turns putting the ball through the hoop and leaving the Wildcats in the dust.

With the score at 9-0, St. Catherine was finally able to score as Jenna Martin made a field goal. Moments later she fouled Senser. Senser made both shots and the Pipers were able to make a couple more baskets before the Wildcats felt the need to call a timeout at only 4:26 into the first half with the score at 13-2.

Evidently, the timeout gave spirit to St. Catherine as Rachel Berglund came out and took the first three-point shot she saw. The shot dropped but was answered by a basket from Senser. The Wildcats answered right back by draining another three pointer, this time from Michel Weinhagen, bringing the score to 15-8 Hamline.

Both teams struggled to make shots until after Hamline’s junior Kelly Lines sunk a three, and St. Catherine took the initiative and started to work hard to diminish Hamline’s lead (18-8).

St. Catherine had managed to bring Hamline’s lead down to a mere 20-17, forcing the Pipers to realize that the Wildcats were a threat and they needed to be stopped. Every shot that Hamline made was answered by a shot from St. Catherine, until St. Catherine’s Berglund and Schneider made two consecutive shots bringing the score to a tie (32-32). It was another shot by Schneider that put the Wildcats in the lead with 1:56 left in the first half.

A free throw made by senior Carolyn Korchik after a foul by St. Catherine’s Martin and a two pointer made
by junior Megan Haugen tied up the game again (37-37). This would not be the last tie of the game. The Pipers and Wildcats continued to answer each others shots until they were tied for the fifth time in the game (43-43) at 4:00 into the second half.

A two-pointer made by Lines brought the Pipers into the lead which lasted until 7:36 into the game when Martin from the Wildcats sunk her second free throw after being fouled by Heinen and the game became tied 51-51.

St. Catherine’s Erin Petrich broke the tie which lasted until freshman Krystal Tschumperlin made a three tying the game at 57-57. The rest of the second half continued in this manner with the teams taking turns being in the lead.

With 1:06 left in the game, a free throw made by sophomore Ashley Vorwerk tied up the game for the 11th time at 69-69. It was St. Catherine that broke the tie and would remain in the lead for the rest of the game
and winning with a final score of 75-72.

Ewert lead the Pipers in scoring with a total of 19 points. Haugen lead in assists with a total of five.

The Pipers will be playing out of state over winter break and will play ten conference games in the month of January.
