Mens basketball suffers dissapointing loss

Last week the Pipers were in Decorah, IA for a thriller and a killer of a game. However, the Pipers record moved to 2-5 after the 86-72 loss. Hamline kept it close but never took control of the game.

At times the Pipers seemed to lack intensity which led to Luther going on one 15-2 run.

Senior big man Charley Good summed it up well. “It was a tough game,” he said. Not much came easy for the Pipers in this game.

Free throws especially killed Hamline. By the end of the game, Luther amassed 21 points on free-throws out of 29 opportunities.

“[Penalties] are killing us in a lot of games this year,” Good said.

Luther was playing double bonus basketball with 13 minutes to go in the game, the vast majority of the
second half. Junior Forward Kyle Foster attributed the penalties to “lazy defense.”

Hamline had only one player score double digits in the game, first-year Tony Thrasher. The forward scored 21 points. He hit nine of his 15 shots from the field. He was the only Piper to score in double digits. Jon DeRock, another first-year, is the leading scorer of the Pipers this year; he only scored nine points in the game against Luther. Freshmen have been playing big roles for the Pipers this year. Foster praised their play. “These guys are doing a great job. They are coming in and making adjustments on the fly. They are very coachable,” he said.

The Pipers are getting unexpected help from the younger players on the team but are also lacking production from the veterans. Hopefully the older guys can come together with this young recruitment class and put it all together.

Though the team is only 2-5 attendance has been up this year. The players really appreciate the support.

“They don’t know how much they help,” said Foster. It is a very talented team that has high expectations from the fans this year.

“We are a playoff team,” Good said. The team has already set high standards for themselves, so anything less than a playoff berth for the Pipers this season will be a disappointment.
