Second annual dodgeball tourney gets rolling

Staff Writer

The three-court gym in Walker Fieldhouse is almost always full of energy, sweat, and plenty of noise from people playing basketball, tennis, soccer, or whatever else their hearts (or bodies) desire. Next Friday it will be full of the same components, but instead of the traditional balls flying around, on this afternoon it will be regulation size rubber dodgeballs as Walker Fieldhouse hosts its Second-Annual Dodgeball Tournament.

The tournament will take place on Friday, Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Fieldhouse. It is a coed tournament, requiring four women per each 10-15 person team. Registration is due with a $15 team fee by Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. The tournament is open to students, faculty, and staff. Each team is required to wear similar clothing. For example, Krissy Thomsen, assistant gymnastics coach and Walker Fieldhouse staff member, played for a team that wore 70s attire.

“Last year we did throwbacks,” Thomsen said. They sported afros, high basketball socks, and legwarmers.
Teams do not have to follow this extravagant approach; members could simply wear the same-colored t-shirt to fit the requirements.

“We had so much fun last year,” Thomsen said. “We got killed. We were out in the first round.”

The victors of the tournament last year were part of a team compiled from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. This year’s event offers the losers from last year a chance to take revenge and for new teams to take a shot at the winner’s prizes. The prizes include four Timberwolves tickets, pizzas, and t-shirts.

“There’s gonna be a dodge-off to determine who wins which prizes,” Janelle Teiken said. That means teammates will battle each other for the best prizes. Teiken, Hamline’s head softball coach and facilities coordinator, participated in the event last year.

“It’s a great study break between finals,” Teiken said.

Not only does the tournament offer a respite from the agony of finals week, it also provides a great opportunity for athletes to the scores with their favorite (or least favorite) coaches. This year there will be a coaches team, and what better way to get back at coaches for all those free throws, laps and killers than by hurling rubber balls at them?
