Sports Briefs

Senior mid-fielder Andrew Helling led the Pipers with 11 goals and five assists for 27 points this season.
He was tied for second in the MIAC with seven goals and two assists for 16 points in conference play.

Helling was also named MIAC All-Conference first team as well as ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District.

His twin brother Andrew was also named all-conference and Academic All-District. He was later named Academic All-America second team.

The duo led the charge for this season’s record breaking soccer season.

The Pipers finished the season with a 10-5-3 record, 5-2-3 in the MIAC. It was the Pipers first winning season in conference play since 1980. They finished fourth in the conference to earn their first playoff berth under head coach Andy Coutts.

The Piper mens team took second with 544 points, while Luther won the team competition with 874 points.
St. Thomas was able to pull out third with 509.

First-year Jonathan Tapia won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.62, took second place in the 100-yard backstroke (55.95), and third place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.39).

Junior Ryan Beckman was third in the 200-yard butterfly.

First-year Jake Burgess placed second in three individual events. He was second in the 200-yard, 50-yard freestyle, and 200-yard backstroke.

Burgess joined team mates Ryan Beckman, Tapia, and John Burgess in the 200-yard freestyle. The team was able to break previous pool record while finishing third.

The diving team also made a strong showing, with junior Jake Kruger taking third in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

On the women’s side, the Pipers were third with 495 points. Luther won the event with 619 points, with St. Thomas in second (585.5).

Sophomore Dana Ketcher won the individual title in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.95.

Sophomore Aly Janzen was second in both the 200-yard butterfly and 500-yard freestyle events. First-year Angela Schroeder was third in the 200-yard backstroke, and senior Linsi Ulstad was third in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Johnnies complete sweep of men’s hockey

After a scoreless first period, St. John’s (6-2-1, 4-0 in the MIAC) scored twice in the first 4:18 of the second period to take the lead. Aaron Getchell netted the first goal 3:10 into the period. Just over a minute later Jordan Swan sent another shot home, making the lead 2-1.

Hamline (1-7-2, 0-3-1) cut the lead in half when Dustin Fulton scored short-handed at 16:06. It was Fulton’s fourth goal of the season.

But the Johnnies added two more goals before intermission on tallies by Jake Hipp and Scott Bjorklund to put the Johnnies up 4-1.

Hamline goaltender Todor Petkov made 33 saves in the game, while his counterpart for the Johnnies, Adam Hanna, was forced to stop only 12.
