Donated toys to spread holiday cheer
As the Christmas season progresses, the College Democrats, the Education Club, and Pride BSA are busy organizing efforts to help those less fortunate.
The College Democrats collected gifts for teens in Bush Library, the Klas center and Giddens Learning Center from Nov. 28 to Dec. 9. The toys will actually be donated to Toys For Tots, but the group decided to ask specifically for gifts for teens. Junior Kari Michaelis said this was because “many people don’t think to buy for teens” when donating during the holiday season. The group felt it was a great “community-oriented” service for the season.
The Education Club is collecting books to be donated to the New Orleans school systems and libraries. The group came up with the idea at one of their fall meetings and decided to act on it. They began collecting books and money for the shipping costs at a coffee event. The club collaborated with Hamline Hancock Elementary fourth-graders, who also collected books and raised money for the cause.
The collected books must be in good condition, with no rips in the binding or pages and they should be
free of writing. The group is collecting all types of books except phone books, textbooks, law books and old encyclopedias.
Donations are also welcome to help cover shipping costs and for other supplies the school and library systems may need. The bright orange collection bins are located in the GLC Lobby, the library, and the student center. The drive continues until Jan. 1. The Education Club is also considering a bake sale or extending the Jan. 1 date, said sophomore Mackenzie Fasteland.
Pride is also holding a toy drive on campus. The drive, which started Nov. 28, will continue through Dec. 14. The group is looking for new, unwrapped toys to donate to the children at the Naomi Family Shelter in St. Paul. Their bin is located in the Student Center Lobby.
