Women start with win, unable to follow up
Womens basketball played its first two games of the season with a record of 1-1 (1-0 MIAC), defeating University of Wisconsin-River Falls (65-53) and barely losing to Gustavus (55-51).
The Hamline Pipers took on the UW-RF Falcons on Tuesday, November 22, at home for their season opener.
UW-RF’s Miranda Biteler was the first to score 2:12 into the game. Not long after, UW-RF’s Traci Reimann fouled and Hamline’s senior guard Carolyn Korchik was given two free throws. Korchik made both of them, putting Hamline on the board.
Hamline held the lead at the half, 26-21. Although UW-RF had a higher shooting percentage from the floor Hamline, the Pipers made 9 of their 10 free throw shots.
After half time the Pipers were ready to go, with senior Laurisa Ewert scoring less than a minute into the second half. The field goal was quickly followed by a three pointer from junior Kelly Lines after Korchik’s steal bringing the score to 31-21 at 1:20 into the second.
Both teams improved their scoring in the second with Hamline sinking 41.7 percent of their floor shots and UW-RF completing 38.7 percent. Hamline won 65-53 Hamline.
Korchik, the seventh leading scorer in Hamline’s history, was the top scorer of the game with 14. Korchik also lead the Pipers in assists (4) and steals (4). University of Wisconsin River Falls’ leading scorer was Miranda Biteler with 10.
Hamline’s defeat of UW-RF was followed by a loss to Gustavus on Wednesday, November 30.
Ewert scored for the Pipers right after the tip-off. The start gave faith to Hamline, and they made basket after basket remaining in the lead until Jess Vadnais of the Gusties made a lay up with 2:57 on the clock bringing the Gustavus into the lead 22-21. The first half ended 23-21 Gustavus.
Hamline outdid Gustavus in percentage of shots made with 34.6 percent to the Gusties 26.9 percent. However, the Pipers were a little off on their free throws as they only completed 3-7; Gustavus completed 7-7.
Ewert again put the first points of the second half on the board, tying the game 23-23. The game shifted
tempo with 1:36 on the clock, when Bri Monahan scored for the Gusties bringing the score to 51-46. Hamline fought to take over the game, but the Gusties were able to deny them for the remaining time. The game ended 55-51.
As in the game against UW-RF the Pipers improved their shooting percentage in the second half (44.4 percent), the Gusties also improved and had a percentage of 40.7. Laurisa Ewert was the top scorer of the game with 26 points.
Hamline will take on St. Catherine at the Hutton Arena on Wednesday, Dec 7. Tip-off is at 7:30.
