Alum dies while serving in Peace Corps

Wyatt Ammon, a ‘04 Hamline graduate died from a fall on November 18 in Kitwe, Zambia. He was 24.

Ammon was in Zambia volunteering with the U.S. Peace Corps in the Rural Aquaculture Promotion Project (RUP). In a press release from the Peace Corps, Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez said,
“Though Wyatt just completed his training and had not had the opportunity to begin his work as a volunteer, it is clear that he was a leader who represented the ideals of the Peace Corps. We greatly mourn his loss to the Peace Corps family,” said Director Vasquez.

Ammon majored in sociology, and spent time abroad at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. He was also active on the Hamline track team.

According to an e-mail sent by Dean Davenport, Ammon worked as a Washington D.C. area as a research analyst for more than a year before joining the Peace Corps.

A website has been set up, www.wyattammon.org, to keep those who knew Ammon aware of events set up in his honor, and the possibility of a scholarship in his name.

Cards may be sent to: The Ammon Family at 312 East 9th Street, Dell Rapids, SD 570221 or on-line at www.wyattammon.org.

Counseling services are available from the Office of Counseling and Health Services, by calling 651-523-2204 or from the Religious and Spiritual Life office by calling 651-523-2315.

The Oracle is asking for students, faculty, staff and alum to write memorials about Ammon for the next issue. Memorials will be accepted until Thursday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. and can be submitted in e-mail or an attached Word document and should be of reasonable length. Printed copies can be slipped under our office door in DS 106.
