New wave of spam e-mails clogs inboxes
“You visit illegal websites.” Thousands of people worldwide have received e-mail messages with this statement in the subject heading over the past several weeks. You’re probably one of them. These spam messages contain a virus known as “Sober.” Other spam e-mail messages contain headings such as “Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie” and “hi, i’ve got a new mail address.”
The virus is a new variety of the Sober worm that first appeared in 2003. The virus attacks Widows based machines when the corresponding attachment to the email is downloaded. After it infects one system, it emails itself to others from the infected machine.
While this variant on the Sober virus is the most widespread since the original incarnation of the virus, the Hamline community has remained largely unaffected. “I’m fairly confident that all e-mail within the Hamline system has been stripped of the attachment,” said network administrator Anthony Schroeder.
Some have expressed concern over this virus because of Hamline’s recent move to online registration and wireless access. Schroeder said that although fighting spam and viruses is a continuing battle, he is confident that the Hamline campus network will remain relatively safe.
The ITS Helpdesk is currently compiling a list of tips to combat viruses, but in the meantime Schroeder recommends having a valid antivirus and making sure that your Operating System is up to date. “Things
like that make a night and day difference,” he said.
Art to finally be displayed
Nick Sagan’s transient painting “From Funk to Satisfaction” is finally going to find a home in Bush Library. He won third place in last year’s art contest put on by HUSC and Mamadada, for which the prizes included cash and permanent display in Bush. The first place and second place works of art, by Terri Blauer and Jon Guyer respectively, were placed in Bush immediately, but Sagan’s was a bit delayed.
Sagan’s painting was placed in Co-Director of Bush Library Diane Clayton’s office after the contest last year. Rumors have circulated that administrators were censoring the painting, but Clayton and Julie Rochat, the other co-director, cited a delay with getting a name plate for Sagan’s work.
Rochat and Clayton said they are happy to own the work and will find a place to display it by the end of this semester.
