Found in the Crowd: Janessa Wentworth, Senior

Everyone, has a specific quality or characteristic that sets them apart from the other masses of people in this world. Maybe they have a crazy hair style, a brightly colored jacket, or perhaps a small yappy dog that draws attention. But senior Janessa Wentworth stands apart for two reasons; her obviously lofty height, and more importantly, her joyfully animated personality, which she claims she got from her beloved, crazy father. However, as I sat on the couch next to her, listening to her stories and watching her eat Milk Duds, I discovered there was a bit more to the story.

Lauren Vikander/Oracle: So you’re a senior and very close to graduation. What is something that is a driving force in your everyday life?

Janessa Wentworth: Well, my major. Management. And it’s funny that you ask because this is a question that I’ve been asking myself a lot recently too. I’ve been trying to figure out what I want to do and what I want to be. I am an incredibly competitive and incredibly motivated person in general. I’m pretty confident in myself, so I know my place is interaction with other people in the business world. And I know that I have the abilities, attitude and motivation to make it in that area. So that’s where my passion lies as well.

O: What are your plans for next year?

JW: I’ve just been interviewing for a few jobs. I had an interview with State Farm and I’m interviewing with General Mills, as well as a media relations company. I’m just getting out there and putting myself out there and seeing what’s available to me and what I’d be the best at.

O: What would be your ideal job?

JW: Well, recently I’ve become really interested in marketing. The international marketing class I’m taking right now stared the trend. So right now, I would like to get into international negotiating; even though I think it’s a dying career, I think it’s really interesting. And then there’s part of me that just wants to got to school forever and just be an intellectual. I would like to go to grad school for philosophy or something crazy like that and just change up my whole life and see what would happen to me.

O: Are you involved in any organizations on campus?

JW: Oh, I would love to be involved in organizations, I would. And I tried my freshman year, but I realized that it was going to take up a lot of my time and I’m not like a lot of the kids at the school. I have to pay for everything. I pay for my school and I pay for rent and all of my expenses. So I work in my spare time.

O: Would you say you have school spirit?

JW: Hell yeah, I love Hamline. I’m always telling people to go to Hamline and how much it rocks. I’m really glad that I came here and I know that I have school spirit. I really wish I could go to more sporting events but time doesn’t allow that for me. I went to a hockey game the other weekend, and I realized how much I miss going to athletic events.

O: What is something outside of school that you enjoy doing?

JW: I teach dance classes and I’ve been dancing since I was three years old. That was my original career choice. When I graduated high school I went out to New York and tried out for the Rockettes, but I found out that the fact that I’m 5’11 isn’t necessarily a good thing and that I was a little too tall for that particular show. So dancing is my thing. And any kind of music. I’ve been in choir forever. My roommates probably get a little annoyed about how much I sing around the house.

O: And what kind of dance are you teaching right now?

JW: I teach a tap class and a jazz class, but tap’s kind of my thing.

O: So you’ve been tapping since you were three?

JW: Yep, I started with tap. Tap’s my thing, I’ve even taken classes with Savion Glover.

O: Who?

JW: You know Savion Glover, the guy from Seasame Street and he does the commercials with the crazy dreads. Anyway, I was chosen to be on a national traveling dance troupe, but I couldn’t do it because of monetary issues. It costs a lot of money to do that crap.

O: What would you say is a common perception that people have about you?

JW: [Laughs] Wow, do I have to answer that truthfully? I think people see me and they know that I like to go out and have a good time. They think that I’m ridiculously crazy and I don’t have a whole lot of inhibitions, and for the most part they’re right. People know that I’m crazy and that I’m out there having fun with my friends.

O: What do you think people’s first impression of you is?

JW: I guess that when I first meet someone depending on the person and what the relationship is, I can be extremely charming. But I am in general. I guess, I’m kind of bigger than life. I mean not only am I towering at six feet, I have these crazy long legs and arms and I get really excited and I use my hands a lot. I think people get taken aback by it. But I think that they’d say I’m a generally nice person. I’m pretty genuine.

O: Let’s do kind of a wild question. If it rained music, what would grow?

JW: I would say intelligence. Music is a huge part of every person’s intelligence. If you participate in music and understand it you’ll possess a certain level of aptitude that others don’t. You’ll have a have a grasp of something that’s completely abstract yet so beautiful and such an amazing art. I think that intelligence and happiness would grow. Oh God, I sound like Drew Barrymore.
