Football loses finale to Carleton

Staff Writer

By now, most everyone at Hamline is aware that the football season is over. The Pipers went to Northfield almost two weeks ago to play their last game of the season. That day our Pipers lost a very close game to Carleton, falling 20-19. The Pipers finished with Augsburg in a tie for last place in the MIAC.

Despite the unsuccessful season, standout cornerback Tyler Schultz had a great season as far as statistics are concerned. He is being recognized for it too. ESPN the Magazine has named Schultz an
Academic All-District V football team. To be eligible for the Academic All-District Football team, a student-athlete has to hold a GPA greater than 3.2. Schultz finished the season with eight interceptions, six pass breakups, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles. He finished the season ranked eighth in the nation, averaging 0.8 interceptions a game. He led the MIAC in interceptions.

Shultz attempted to snatch the Hamline record for interceptions a season, which stands at nine. Shultz, who entered the game with seven picks, grabbed one interception in the second quarter. It was his only interception of the game.

Before half time, Hamline took the lead on a 16 yard touchdown run by running back Ben Dahmes. The Pipers botched the extra point and the score was 19-13. The extra point proved to be crucial as the Pipers went on to lose by one point. Things were looking good for the Pipers late in the fourth quarter when they led 19-13. With less than five minutes left, the Knights drove 58 yards on a stretch of 10 plays to score a touchdown. Carleton relied heavily on running back R.J. Jackson, who carried the ball six times. Jackson scored on a one yard rush on fourth down after being denied by the Piper defense three times.

Dahmes rushed for two scores on the day. In addition to his 16 yard touchdown, he scored on an eight yard run. Dahmes rushed for 73 yards on 25 carries. This is the third season in a row he finishes as the Pipers’ leading rusher.

It looks as though Hamline could enter next season with a solid quarterback in place too. James Leary was 18 for 32 passing for 192 yards and a score against Carleton. He was intercepted twice but has shown promise as he stepped in for Andrew Seymour.

This was a season of transition as it was Coach Paul Miller’s first year. The team has a lot going for them next season with all their returning players. The Pipers did not improve upon their record from the previous season. They matched it identically, leaving only room to improve.
