Letter to the Editor: Defense against make up, a rebuttal
Dear Melissa,
While I do happen to feel very strongly against plastic surgery of any kind, even more so than make up, you can’t criticize me for not writing about it. I do think plastic surgery is ridiculous, but make up is even more so a reality to college-age folk. But don’t get me started; I’m somewhat morally against hair style, designer clothes, manicures, the existence of fashion in general and anything related, and I’d have been happy to write about any and all of those things. I don’t and won’t hold any of these things against anyone personally.
And it’s not only male business owners that create the “ideal” image of beauty. It’s sexist to say so. The ideal image of beauty cannot be portrayed without the help of those women who (make their own decision to) model in magazines, get made-up for public appearances, and advertise for cosmetic companies. Those women aren’t protesting doing that, and I don’t know why you’re not protesting them.
I wouldn’t recommend girls to not wear make up simply because I think it’s attractive, it’s because it’s
natural, which happens to be attractive. I disregard what people think beauty is, as you seem to. You say make up “enhances...natural beauty,” but I completely disagree. So there’s no more to argue about that, I guess.
In no way did I try to tell women what to wear or say, so I don’t know what you mean by that. I do happen to think that anyone who buys into the fashion world is missing something in life. But that’s just me. I’d feel a lot worse about the controversy over my article if it weren’t for all the girls who let me know my article was empowering to them and really appreciated. So as you can see, it was not meant to cause any offense or stir up any debate.
And by the way, about your idea to shave my beard to avoid being a hypocrite, I’d say the exact opposite. It’s just what my body does, so I don’t care if it happens to mask a part of my face since I care quite little about what I look like. It’d be unnatural to shave.
