Tribute to Rosa Parks celebrates her achievements and legacy

Last Wednesday, students gathered at Sundin Music Hall to celebrate the life of Rosa Parks, a woman who contributed greatly to the civil rights movement and inspired countless numbers of people. Michael Elliot led the ceremony, along with a short speech from Dean of Students Alan Sickbert with a candle lighting, a brief biography presented by CLA junior Sarah Atwood, and a reflection presented by Chair of the Social Justice Department Earl Schwartz.

The biography Atwood read, which was taken from http://www.achievement.org, highlighted Parks’ life and achievements, including a description of her childhood and the last years of her life spent in Detroit, Michigan.

A movie, The Rosa Parks Story, was also presented after the audience participated in the singing of the well-known hymn “We Shall Overcome.” Discussion then began, followed by the closing remarks.
Another larger event will take place on campus on Dec. 1, the 50th anniversary of the day Parks refused to give up her seat for a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955.
