Editorial: Returning from conference, a report

Every year, the Oracle travels to a national media convention, run partially by the Associated Collegiate Press, of which we are a member. Our participation in the conference was paid for by the university’s media fee, which is levied by the Student Media Board.

In return for this fee, we feel obliged to relay to you the events of the conference funds.

You, the reader, will begin to see immediate changes in the Oracle. We generated dozens of story ideas from the conference, some of which may appear on these pages.

This also affects the Sports section, edited by Trevor Maine. The section has been moved to include the back page. This allows for more prominent photographs and a better use of color.

As a legacy organization, the conference helped us plan for the upcoming spring semester.

Coming in the spring, the Oracle will go through a major staff overhaul. Of our eight section editors, four are going abroad, one is graduating and two are being promoted. This leaves only one section editor
remaining in the same position throughout the year. One could call this a transitional time.

To mitigate this influx, Oracle staff members returning from abroad will take over the open positions. The knowledge gained through the three days of 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. sessions at the conference will be transferred to the next crew of editors.

These are just a few examples of how we are putting your student media fee dollars to work to produce tangible results. Last year, we won Best of the Midwest for our division. This year, we hope to maintain that high level of quality.
