Professor suffers brain aneurism; Forte listed in critical condtion

Staff Writer

In the wake of numerous other faculty misfortunes this fall, Hamline was struck again with tragedy. While attending a conference at Hamline’s School of Law, Professor Tania Forte complained of a headache only minutes before collapsing to the ground. Paramedics were called immediately and Forte was rushed to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She was diagnosed with a brain aneurism and was operated on immediately.

At of press time, Forte remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the hospital.
A new addition to Hamline’s faculty this autumn, Forte transferred here from Macalester College. Forte was currently teaching two special topics courses at Hamline: Consumption and Shopping in Global Perspective for the Global Studies program and Global Feminisms in the Womens Studies department.
Forte received her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago before moving abroad to teach at the Ben Gurion Institution in Israel. She has family and friends around the world from France to Israel to Egypt.

Being a new professor, she was also a part of a requisite orientation program administered by Dean
Alzada Tipton. The program focused on the discussion of teaching issues and strategies and incorporating the new professors into Hamline’s system. Dean Tipton says Forte was very informed during discussions, describing her as a vocal and intelligent part of the group. She also admires Forte’s strong
commitment to the best student education possible. When discussing curriculums, Forte would work pertinaciously to make sure students were receiving the best education possible in the subject at hand.

Forte is very interdisciplinary in her approach to education. She specializes in Womens Studies, Global
Studies, Conflict Studies, and Social Justiceč all of which make her a wonderful addition to the Hamline community. “Her life embodies Global Studies from where she’s been and what she’s done in the global arena,” Tipton remarked.

All four of these programs were consensual in their agreement to hire her this fall. It was an unconventionally cooperative effort by the disciplines, but this was due mostly to Professor Forte’s strong qualifications as an educator. Tipton commented that “[her] position has the potential of affecting lots of students in lots of programs.” This is just an extended consequence of an already catastrophic event.

After the incident, students from both of her classes signed large cards and had them delivered to her at the hospital. President Hanson and her family were allowed to visit Professor Forte in the intensive care unit. Forte’s parents and siblings, who are living in France, traveled immediately to St. Paul to be with her.

The Womens Studies and Global Studies programs are working to compensate for the vacancy left by Forte’s rush to the hospital. Professor Kristin Mapel-Bloomberg from the Womens Studies department is temporarily taking over one of Forte’s classes, and Professor Kate Bjork of the Global Studies discipline is helping out with her other class. However, faculty members are working together to help unfold the rest of the semester.

Forte’s condition remains critical, and at press time there had been no new information concerning her condition.
