Safe Zone educates, supports, empowers
Over 150 Hamline students, faculty and staff now have at least one thing in common: they have all attended Safe Zone training.
Safe Zone training is organized by Assistant Dean of Students for Diversity and Community Carlos Sneed and Javier Gutierrez, Associate Director of Residential Life. The program was started last year as a way to educate and train Hamline community members in GLBT issues.
“The overall goal of Safe Zone training is to learn about, discuss, and take a more proactive approach to GLBT faculty, staff, and student concerns,” Sneed said.

Sexual assault hits home
WHEN Janet awoke from a night spent at the bar, she wasn’t sure where she was. Or who the strange man was sleeping next to her. Or where her clothes were. Or why there was a bottle of lubricant between her legs. Or why her genitalia hurt. Or why there were rug burns on her forearms. Then it hit herčshe had been raped.
Rewinding to the pervious evening, Janet, whose name has been changed to protect her identity, was at Sally’s, a bar near the University of Minnesota campus. Wednesday night was ladies night at Sally’s.
Although women drank free from 10 to 11 p.m., Janet “had been drinking free all night. Guys always want to buy a girl a drink.” Janet said she had around six drinks that evening, and was heavily intoxicated as a result.
She had a designated driver, who tried to call her cell phone throughout the evening. Somehow, however, Janet never answered her phone and the two got separated. The last thing she remembers that evening was talking to a group of men outside. She said her friends knew where she was at that point.

Fright Farm
Who knew that haunting is an art form?
When Halloween rolls around, people of all ages roam through the night on a quest to find the best scares of the city.
Some want to be grossed out by gore, others like to scream in surprise, and many find intrigue in the strange and bizarre.
At Fright Farm, the terror tactic is theatrics.
Mark Lopez, who oversees Fright Farm’s artistic direction, believes his haunted house is unique in comparison to other Halloween performances in the area.

Editorial: Oracle proud of Safe Zone training participation
The Oracle staff would like to commend the administration for putting the “Safe Zone” training into effect.
The addressing of this issue is past due. The training will only benefit the Hamline society and help promote diversity in lifestyle choices. Additionally, the fact that over 150 staff, students, and faculty have attended the training is applaudable. The community is reaching out and accepting this idea with open arms.
This is encouraging in light of the tolerance issues the university has experienced over the past few years. We feel that if people are educated about the issues, more people would understand the myriad of issues surrounding the GLBTIA community. In a time of growing awareness and acceptance, the Oracle would like to be a participant in the fight.

Hitchcock is perfect Halloween fright
Halloween is fast approaching, and that typically means slasher flicks and bump-in-the-night thrillers are in order at the cineplexes, but this year, for some reason, Hollywood seems to have forgotten about the scariest day of the year.
Oh sure, The Fog and Saw II are both out in theaters, but for those of us who have film palettes more refined than a nine-year-old, the scariest thing at the movie theaters is the price of Milk Duds. However, there’s no need to worry, there are Blockbuster Videos everywhere, and what could make for a more chilling Halloween than an evening with the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock? Hitchcock is so synonymous with pop culture references, it seems absurd to introduce him in a column, but the fact is, people just don’t watch him with the regularity that they used to.

Mens soccer locked in dogfight for MIAC tournament berth
It all started on Thursday, Sep. 1, when mens soccer put down Northwestern 2-0. The team would go on to win their next three games without giving up a single goal. A clean sheet in one match is nothing to be scoffed at, but Hamline produced four in a row.
The team lost its next game, but came back to its winning ways only a couple weeks later, and hasn’t looked back. Last year at this time the men were ranked 7th in the MIAC; this year they proudly hold a tie for second with only three games left in the season at press time. One might think that with such a record that Pipers would be a lock for one of the four playoff slots in the MIAC’s Nov. 2 playoff series, but in a division as competitive as this nothing is certain.
“It’s nice to control our win destiny,” said Piper head coach Andy Coutts.

Dear Nick:
About a week ago I went home for the weekend and ended up having sex with one of my friend’s sisters. Both myself and my friend’s sister are single, but the real problem is that she’s only 16! I mean, I only turned 19 a few weeks ago and I know it was wrong, but I really like her. So, should I pretend it never happened and hope no one finds out, because I could probably get in legal trouble for this, or do you think
I can just keep going with it? She was totally into it, she consented and all, so I have trouble thinking it was totally wrong. After all, we’re just two and a half years apart.
Age of Intercourse
