St. Thomas spikes Hamline into oblivion
Volleyball put up a fight against St. Thomas in their Oct. 19 match, but were unable to take a single game against the offensive powerhouse of the Tommies. Hamline fell 30-17, 30-22, 30-27 in Hutton Arena.
St. Thomas took control of the first game with a staggering 14 straight points, 13 of which were served by first-year phenom Molly Conway. Hamline was simply unable to mount a significant offense, but still managed to pull out 17 points though they failed to score a kill.
The second game saw some minor improvements in the Pipers’ offense, garnering them 22 points. St. Thomas, meanwhile, continued to hammer the ball home, hitting 21 kills.
The attack ended with Hamline dropping the second game.
Hamline took its first lead of the night 16-10 in the third game. Just as Hamline looked to be getting their feet beneath them, St. Thomas dashed their hopes by scoring seven straight and reclaiming the lead.
Dana Luiken and Shelby Hyllengren lead the Piper offense with seven kills apiece, and Emily Amici tallied five of her own. Still, Hamline’s kill percentage was under .200 over the three game. With that sort of numbers it’s hard to gain a win, especially against St. Thomas, who is one of the most dominant forces in the MIAC.
Hamline was unable to stop the St. Thomas. The Tommies’ Rachelle Dosch walked onto the court with 989 kills and had 11 for the night. Erika Wetzel and Kristin Storrs each had 14 kills.
The Tommies are now 9-0 in the MIAC and 22-4 on the season. This victory helped them clinch one of the top two slots in the MIAC as they move toward tournament time. St. Thomas hopes to grab the top seed for the six-team conference playoffs with a victory in either of their next two matches. If the Tommies win both games, they will clinch the championship.
This week Hamline travels to Menomonie, Wisc. for the UW-Stout Invitational with hopes of victory and redemption.
