Editorial: Oracle proud of Safe Zone training participation

The Oracle staff would like to commend the administration for putting the “Safe Zone” training into effect.
The addressing of this issue is past due. The training will only benefit the Hamline society and help promote diversity in lifestyle choices. Additionally, the fact that over 150 staff, students, and faculty have attended the training is applaudable. The community is reaching out and accepting this idea with open arms.

This is encouraging in light of the tolerance issues the university has experienced over the past few years. We feel that if people are educated about the issues, more people would understand the myriad of issues surrounding the GLBTIA community. In a time of growing awareness and acceptance, the Oracle would like to be a participant in the fight.

The Oracle staff would also like to let the Hamline community know that we plan on taking steps toward making our office a Safe Zone. We want to assume the responsibilities of educating, understanding, and encouraging GLBTIA rights and choices. We want to assume the risk of announcing that we would like to officially become an ally, as a group, to the GLBTIA community. We pledge to be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy.

Again, the administration stepped up to the plate and assumed responsibility of educating the masses on such a touchy and sensitive topic. We hope that this trend will continue with other issues that come up, be it rape, sexual harassment, or extended diversity training. Needless to say, the Oracle will step up the effort to be a participating body. Thank you, Hamline, for also assuming responsibility to educate yourselves on the issues as well. The Oracle is proud of the community they are a part of. We are honored to represent you.
