Pipers hand Rams their horns in 7-0 victory
The womens soccer team has had its ups and downs this season, with win streaks followed by dry spells, and nearly as many losses as wins. The team is 7-5 overall, 2-4 in the MIAC. Despite this roller-coaster ride of a season, the Piper women have managed to win their last two matches in fine form.
Last Thursday the team played its first match under the bright lights of Klas Field against North Central University. The Pipers were nothing short of dominant on this night, netting an impressive seven goals and shutting out North Central.
Hamline showed signs of greatness on both offense and defense, controlling the ball almost the entire game. Their forwards and midfielders shut down every attempt by North Central to get into their offense or even advance the ball out of their own backfield.
The Pipers exhibited superior ball movement, running on to passes, muscling out defenders, and taking advantage of opportunities that seemed to appear out of thin air. Even when passes went awry, the forwards seemed to be able to run onto them, creating goal scoring chances that led to some great shots on goal.
Hamline was able to fired off 37 shots. Only five members of the team, including the goal-keeper, didn’t put tallies in she shot column. Only 17 of these shots were on goal, ten of which were saved by North Central’s Casey Fitzgerald.
Ann Donner alone banged out ten shots, with seven on goal, and three scoring. Donner was assisted by two different teammates on her attack runs and took one in solo.
KC Heaney and Kim Magill each scored a goal apiece. These two goals came within two minutes of one another as the Pipers continued their relentless assault.
Hamline was able to earn themselves 11 corner kicks, six in the first half, and five in the second. North
Central’s defense seemed unable to deal with the constant pressure from Hamline’s offense.
By the end of the first 45 minutes Hamline was up 3-0. Starter Christine Feely and substitute Kayla Kaiser each scored goals before the 70th minute struck.
The second half was no different from the first, with the Pipers dominating on offense as well as in their own backfield. Hamline’s defense played so tightly that North Central was only able to loose one shot, albeit well placed. Kalyn Maki took the shot, which was stopped by Hamline goal keeper Dre Eilertson.
Eilertson didn’t have to prove herself this game, as this was the only time she touched the ball during a scoring opportunity, but she has been no slouch in past weeks.
North Central began to get chippy in the second half, committing three fouls. Despite this physicality of the match, Hamline was able to continue their offensive push.
Nothing seemed to be able to stop this womens team as they marched over North Central University 7-0.
The team produced a great showing in their first match under the bright lights, and may have set the tone for the next few weeks as their schedule heats up.
