Volleyball falls in three straight to Carleton
Hamline Volleyball played the Carleton Knights in Northfield, MN in a MIAC match and lost 0-3 last Wednesday.
Right from the beginning of game one, the Pipers were behind as the Knights quickly got an 11-3 lead before the Pipers were able to get into their game mode. The Knights were able to increase their lead to 21-7 with little resistance from the Pipers and ended the first game with a score of 30-11 Carleton.
Hamline was one notch behind.
The second game didn’t seem promising to Hamline as Carleton quickly obtained a 10-4 lead on the Pipers, which soon turned into 21-11 and ended 30-20 Carleton; Hamline was never able to take control of the game and never led. The Pipers were suddenly down 2 games to none in the best of 5 match.
Sure enough, the Pipers came on strong in the third game, fighting to make it past three games as they gained an early lead 6-1. However, unexpectedly, the Knights answered with six consecutive points taking the lead 7-6 and making the game a close one. Carleton and Hamline took turns being the leader for the rest of the third game. Hamline was in the lead at 13-10 only to have Carleton tie up the game 17-17 and then ended 30-25 Carleton. The valiant effort of the Pipers was not valiant enough to win the third game, so the match ended 3-0, with Carleton making Hamline’s record 9-11 (2-6 in the MIAC).
Sophomore Shelby Hyllengren had 8 kills and 11 digs; freshman Amanda Booth hadwith 3 kills and 5 blocks; sophomore Angie Asmus contributed with 17 assists; and junior Jenna Witt with 12 digs.
Hamline will take on St. Thomas at home at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct.19.
