Intramural flag football provides competitive fun

Staff Writer

Flag football is a special game. A rare game. The people who play it make it so. Every blustery Tuesday and Thursday, Hamline’s own warriors collide on the frozen tundra, or rather, the artificial grass of Klas Field. This battlefield is host to the most mentally and physically exasperating activity on campus.

As first-year referee Jon Murphy said, “The players are extremely competitive. They come together and strategize. Probably more so than the pros.”

Flag football is also a unique game. One must master the mental as well as the physical aspects to compete. People who take the game too lightly do not last very long.

For those interested in becoming a part of this engaging and invigorating enterprise, do not fear. Flag football is indeed an exciting activity of life: the camaraderie, the strategy, the physical drive required, and of course the fame.

“At this level, people don’t play for the money. It’s flag football. We are competitive, nonetheless it’s only intramural. People here play for the love of the game” said Murphy.

This season has provided for some great stories. The Hamline Law students ( have come out of the gates with guns blazing. Reports of their superior size and physical domination over much younger tems spread through the league like wildfire.

Despite the ferocious game of the Law students, a few up and comers have made quite a splash. The
“Have Beens,” lead by Isaac Fordyce, are 3-0. If they keep it up, they will likely land a spot in the playoffs.
This rag-tag group of ex-athletes plays with the same level of moxie that prison inmates do when playing they get their chance against the officers. That isn’t to say that the “Have Beens” cause terror. They just play real good football, just like each of the teams from Hamline Law.

There is definitely a level of pride associated with Hamline’s Intramural Flag Football. This pride has no doubt attracted athletes from all over campus. First-year Teng Lor said, “I love playing flag football at Hamline. I just really wanted some playing time. I hear people talk about how it’s just flag football, but I say at least I will have a chance to play and maybe even win a title. Our guys are the best and in a couple of years it will be my time to shine.”
