Reactions to Hanson positive

Staff Writer

The reaction from those who attended the inauguration of President Linda Hanson last Friday was positive. The general consensus from the students who attended implied that the students are expecting good things from Dr. Hanson over the years. Casey O’Donnell, CLA junior said, “It was fantastic. I’m looking toward a brighter future for Hamline with Dr. Hanson”.

Echoing these sentiments, CLA senior Alex Pennell said, “I thought it was a great tribute to a woman who deserves everything. It was encouraging to see her plans. I believe that the spirit of Hamline is alive in her!
I’m sorry I won’t be here next year to see what she does.”

CLA students weren’t the only ones pleased with Dr. Hanson’s remarks, physics professor Jerry Artz said,
“She’s so down to earth, and she’s done so much for Santa Fe with the 5-year plan. I think she’s going to involve a lot of people” Comments seem to indicate that faculty, staff, and students alike are looking forward to the next phase of Hamline history led by Dr. Hanson.

Along with the positive reaction to Dr. Hanson’s mission statement, students expect Dr. Hanson to go above and beyond her stated mission. CLA junior Chris Johnson said, “I thought it was a good call to action but I wish there had been more talk about our own privilege and how we need to recognize that and also use it towards the civic leadership that she was talking about”.

CLA senior and HUSC Vice-President John MulÄ noted, “I thought the message was good. I thought that she hit on some really important issues that don’t get enough attention. It’s not just about tradition, but growth. Everything at the university needs to grow.”

Despite the positive response to Hanson’s address, Hutton arena was conspicuously empty last Friday. “I thought it was interesting. I’m glad I went, but I was kind of disappointed that the student turnout was so low. We really got to see and hear about Hamline history today”, said sophomore Bryan Brocksome. Jill
Johnson of the CLA class of ’71 agreed with Brocksome, “I was disappointed to see that all the seats down below weren’t filled up I was surprised there weren’t more students”.

Although there was a general feeling of disappointment that the event was so sparsely attended, those who did attend stayed positive. A sign carried by Alex Erickson and Shannon Eckman which read “I’ve got inauguration fever,” put a smile on Dr. Hanson’s face as she posed for a photo.
