Students sample jambalaya for relief
A light breeze pushed around the sweet sounds of Deep South jazz and the mouthwatering aroma of jambalaya. Seven tables with seven very different versions of the famous Louisiana dish, concocted by various Hamline groups and organizations, were on the lawn behind the bishop, vying for the title of Best Jambalaya at Hamline. People lined up to try the dishes, which were foreign to most Minnesotans, to help victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Co-organizers Megan Bentley and DeeDee Shogren said the Hamline community put on a “fantastic” show of supportčdancing, eating, and raising almost five hundred dollars for people affected by this tragedy. Shogren said the idea for the event came about from their desire to put on something that was “fun and different and really paid homage” to the culture and people of New Orleans.
Everything, from Spectrum’s “flaming jambalaya” ą a.k.a. carnivore delite ą to the student accounts office’s take on Emeril’s jambalaya, to vegan goulash was dished out to the passersby, most of whom were grooving, at least a little bit, to the mood music of the Jumpin’ Jehosafats.
The band, which included Professor Duane Cady, donated their time to make this event even more authentic and fun. Attendees were asked to try as many versions of the exotic cuisine as they would like, then vote for their favorite after they had tasted a sufficient amount to make an educated decision. The group with the highest number of votes at the end of the evening won $100 to be donated in their name to the Red Cross, with part of the cover charges going to a Methodist relief organization as well. Womens Lacrosse, led by Kyle Sweeney, made the winning jambalaya. Bentley was “really pleased” at how much money the event raised for our New Orleans neighbors.
