Volleyball triumphs in 5 sets over St. Olaf

Sports Editor

Volleyball’s win over the St. Olaf Oles last Wednesday was nothing short of awe inspiring. The Pipers started the match strong, winning the first game 30-25. Hamline’s offense was in good form, with a solid sixteen kills and only five errors, while the defense held off St. Olaf. The Oles had eighteen kills with only nine errors in the same game, giving them a lower hit percentage than the Pipers, which didn’t prove enough to take the win.

Slowly in the second game St. Olaf began to fight back, taking the offensive and putting down Hamline.
The Pipers weren’t able to make quite the same offensive showing as in the last game, opening the door for the Oles to walk away with the second game win 30-22. Hamline, however, was not to be stopped.
They got down in the third game, but attempted to come back for the win. The Pipers forced the Oles to fight for the win, pushing them at every chance they got, and earning twenty kills in the process. St. Olaf was able to boast just four more kills, and in the end, took the win for the third game 34-32.

After their promising start, the Pipers found themselves only one loss away from being sent back to the locker room.

St. Olaf took the lead in the fourth game early. Hamline proved that they would not go quietly, blowing the game wide open toward the middle and moving up 12-10. From there the Pipers hammered home ten straight points. They increased their lead to as much as thirteen, but the Oles tried to come back. The rally proved to be too little, too late, as Hamline took the game 30-21. The team had only fourteen kills, but improved their shot percentage to the best it had been since the first game. The two teams were now even at two games apiece.

It was sudden death as the teams geared up for the fifth and final game. Hamline pummeled St. Olaf with offense, while the Oles began to flounder on the attack. Hamline was able to keep up the steam throughout the game, but St. Olaf had a dismal ten errors to go along with their twelve kills, which counted for every point they would score in the game. In the end, Hamline put down St. Olaf 15-12 to take the match in fine form.

Hamline had 69 kills for the evening, with Dana Luiken and Shelby Hyllengren each tallying over twenty apiece. Both also shot over .300 for the evening. Heather Rich also hit home eleven kills for the Pipers.

On the flip side, St. Olaf had four players with over ten kills each, one of whom had close to twenty-five. Hamline’s defense was able to defend against this impressive showing, sending the Oles home with a loss.

Although they found themselves on the verge of losing early in the match, Hamline seemed able to cope with the stress and was able to turn the tables on St. Olaf, a team that is ranked four places higher than Hamline in the MIAC.
