At a loss for thy beloved Internet access; While working, a frustated disconnection

Columnist

It is 10 p.m. and I am right in the middle of completing my homework when I go to get online to get something off of Blackboard. What a shock low and behold my Internet doesn’t work, again. I’ve only been here three short weeks and this is not the first, the second, or the third time I have not been able to get online. It is the same with the wireless, too, but since they’ve only had it on campus two months, maybe I could understand.

I have the kind of Internet that I need to buy a 20 foot ethernet cord to plug in to the wall to get; the kind that should always work as long as I can make a phone call. So I wait, and I wonder what on earth could be wrong. I check all my hook ups to make sure I’m not blonde and something has just disconnected. Nope everything is connected. I walk down the hall and ask if other connection are working. Nope, nobody has the Internet. What a pain and a nuisance and, to be honest, what a shame.

I remember not too long ago that I was charged a $75 technology fee. Where did the money go, I pondered to myself? I pay an unbelievable tuition in hopes for a better educational experience than one I could receive from a state university. I had a great experience at a vocational college, which made me even more excited to come here. If that school, was great Hamline should be phenomenal. Then this kind of thing happens. I just don’t get it. The Internet always worked at the little vocational school. They even fixed your commuter if it broke down, whether you had rented from them or not. Why not here? What is up with our technology department? I was fuming.

Maybe some people think I’m overreacting, and some are probably partially correct. I love my Internet, I admit it. I’m a geek. I get home from class, do my homework, and sit in front of my computer screen. I’m not always online, but I do e-mail many people at the end of the day and I like to be able to check stuff, like Blackboard, for postings.

The Internet in the dorms should be working; it shouldn’t disconnect. When the school requires us to buy certain equipment to ensure everything is compatible and then the Internet doesn’t work anyway, that’s disappointing. I didn’t spend $1,300 on a new computer so that my Internet could work only when it felt like it. I think we should require the technology department to step up to the plate. If the school needs to hire more staff or pay to fix connections, so be it. That’s what the fee is for. I just want my Internet.
