Super Target arrival brings bargain shoppers happiness
Katherine Sherman

Target is no longer just a spot for house products and clothes, but an all around convenience store.
Following Wal-Mart’s lead, Target is changing the face of the retailing landscpae by adding Super Targets nation-wide in attempt to boost convenience while simultaneously boosting size.
Businesses unwilling to follow this national trend have run into trouble. K-MART, a Target and Wal-Mart competitor, filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and closed many stores nation-wide.
With a local Super Target opening up on Snelling and County Road B near HarMar Mall on Oct. 9, where will Hamline students shop and how does it really compare to stores like Cub and Rainbow for groceries?
“[Super Target] is a beautiful thing,” said CLA senior Grace Jones, who lives in northeast Minneapolis.
“The food is better there and prices are lower,” she said.
Jones relies on Rainbow for much of her grocery shopping; the prices are decent and the stores are better kept than Cub in her area.
Jenna Hanson, a senior at Hamline who lives off campus, said she prefers to go grocery shopping at stores that emphasize natural and organic foods, like Whole Foods. For items that are more costly she sticks to her budget and goes to Rainbow or Cub.
“Rainbow is consistently cheaper but almost always Cub has better quality,” said Hanson.
Hanson said she spends about $20 dollars a week for groceries and makes sure to go where she can find the best prices, which means Rainbow for produce and Target for everything else on her list.
Target tends to be cheaper in most areas than Rainbow and Cub, but Rainbow tends to be cheaper than Cub. Students looking around for the best buy may want to start making their way to Target for a few grocery items. See the graph at right for a detailed breakdown on prices.
