HUSC’s first year representative elections ran very smoothly this year and brought out a larger than usual numbers of voters this year. This year 14 first years ran for first year representative spots.
“The large number of candidates shows that first years are definitely interested in participating in student government and making our campus a better place, so i am optimistic that the turnout is a sign of things to come for the rest of the year,” Alex Erickson, HUSC secretary said.
Newly elected first year representative, Phillip Ray choose Hamline because of its liberal location and culture. Ray is originally from Maryville, Tennessee, a suburb of Knoxville, an area he describes as very conservative.
"When I found out about student congress, I thought in Tennessee I couldn’t do anything like this, and I have always thought there needed to be a better way for homosexuals to get into student government,” Ray said.
Ray describes himself as a people person, and he feels that his communication skills are his strongest asset.
Jeana Bloome’s main goal as first year representative is to help underrepresented students have their voices heard. She chose to run for HUSC office because of her leadership skills.
“I know that I have a lot of leadership qualities. I know that I have fun getting out there and getting involved, helping other people get involved,” Bloome.
At the time of printing the Oracle could not contact the other first year representatives Jacob Thompson and Taylor Seeman.
Two other representative positions were filled at the Sept. 20 general assembly, sophomore representative, and student of color representative.
Dwayne Fisher was elected to the student of color representative position. One of his main goals is to get more students of color to HUSC general assemblies.
Ebony Baggett was elected to an open sophomore representative position. Baggett described herself as a very easy person to approach and voice opinions to.
HUSC general assemblies take place in GLC 100E during convo hour on Tuesdays.
