The Race Files: Network eager to begin year as columnists
Each year, the university is able to take a team of faculty, staff, and CLA students to the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE). This annual conference is nationally recognized as one of the most encompassing gatherings of activists, student leaders, educators, and scholars who have the desire to expand their knowledge of race and ethnicity, both in the U.S. and globally. It draws over a thousand attendees and takes place over approximately one week. This past June, our team traveled to New York City to take part in NCORE 2005.
We found that the university was one of the few schools at the conference that requires attendees to make a yearlong commitment to bringing campus-wide initiatives back to the community. For the most part, these initiatives are catalyzed by workshops, speakers, and interaction with others at the conference. This allows us to form a network of support back on campus through personal goals and anti-racism campus programs. The following year looks promising for this year’s NCORE team. Members of the team can be found all around campus, collectively spanning everything from the theater department to graduate school, from sophomore to senior year. Here is some brief information about the NCORE students you might see wandering the campus:
