Volleyball third in Hamline Invite, 4-1 overall

Sports Editor

Hamline volleyball ended last week 4-1 overall, during which they placed third in the Hamline Invitational tournament. The team had to put out Buena Vista College in a 5-game battle to advance to the medal round, but held strong and got the win.

The tournament saw two Pipers, setter Angie Asmus and outside hitter Shelby Hyllengren, named to the eight person All-Tournament Team. Jenna Witt anchored the Hamline defense with help from Dana Luiken and Heather Rich to keep Hamline near the top.

The weekend also brought some notoriety back to Hamline volleyball, as Hyllengren became the first Piper in six years to win accolades as the MIAC’s volleyball hitter of the week. Hyllengren played in 20 games for the week, and hit 83 kills with only 25 errors in her 193 attempts. That put her to .301 hitting percentage, with an average of 4.15 kills per game.

Despite last weeks efforts, the team fell in their first conference game to Gustavus Sept, 14. Hamline was swept by the Gusties in three straight games, none of which ended with the Pipers any closer than seven points down. Junior Heather Rich and sophomore Shelby Hyllengren had eleven kills each, as they tried to keep the Pipers afloat. Dana Luiken also helped the effort with nine kills. The Pipers were only able to hit .084 percent for the night.

Although the team’s conference opener didn’t go as well as planned, the season has only just begun for Hamline. As conference play heats up, the Pipers will need to step up to compete in the MIAC.

The team was 6-4 when the Oracle went to press.
