« The Man just keeps everyone down | Main | Guilty pleasures: Go ahead and indulge in these questionable flicks »

Leave Undiscovered just that: undiscovered.
So I must admit, a small part of me likes Ashlee Simpson. That was the reason I went to the movie, sadly. It had potential. The filmography seemed sort of indie-flick and Ashlee wasn’t using her celebrity to be the lead in the movie. She had a smaller, supporting role. It didn’t seem like a Hilary Duff movie.
However, I should have realized the quality of the movie when I walked in and my group of friends made the total viewing audience five. Things became rapidly worse when the confusing and cheesy subway/meeting scene started the movie. I’m sorry, but throwing gloves at girls usually does not result in love at first sight. Maybe a restraining order, but not love.
Of course, the star-crossed lovers obsessed about each other for about two years before running into each other again at some dark bar in L.A. Who would even recognize someone he or she saw once on a subway?
The two main characters are also completely ridiculous. There is no way anyone could relate to these characters, nor would anyone want to emulate their lives. The main female character, Brier, is a New York model turned wanna-be LA actress. The main male character, Luke, is not much better. He is an “indie” rock star who goes from New York to L.A. to “make it big”. The entire movie is cliché like this. A model/wanna-be actress meets a struggling musician and they fall in love, blah blah blah.
The movie goes on to follow the success stories of the two lovers, with Simpson as the faithful side kick to both. Her part is so small and unimportant that you could take her out of the movie and not even notice, except when she insists on singing one of her songs (aptly named “Undiscovered”) towards the end of the movie. Simpson’s character, Clea (where did they come up with these names?) has the worst lines and scenes, which really do not help her acting career. How can anyone take her seriously as an actress when her résumé consists of a bit part in “Undiscovered” and “7th Heaven?” Or wait, that’s right, she wants to be a singer now too.
Finally, the movie becomes even more cliché when, and I promise I’m not ruining the ending, Luke does the traditional slow motion run through an empty airport to catch up with the woman he loves. Undiscovered does not have an original scene in the entire thing!
I am usually not a harsh movie critic, but when I exclaim during the middle of the film that I’m bored, there is something wrong here. The story line is overdone, if you can even follow it through the whole movie. I still don’t know what happened to Luke’s illustrious movie career. Needless to say, the movie is not worth seeing. I have to say Miss Simpson, I’m disappointed.
