Letter to the Editor: When working doesn’t work out

As fulfilling and wonderful as life at Hamline is, tuition bills mean a prolonged descent into poverty for those students paying for their own education. Before anyone attempts to deliberate possible alternatives to signing over saving accounts and paychecks for the next twelve years, allow me to provide the unfortunate but helpful results of careful calculations; you will most likely need a job.

As a returning student and survivor of crippling angina brought on by an onslaught of daunting bills, I found a job after sadly discovering that Hamline no longer accepts a wagon of the family’s vegetables as a tuition payment. For those that have been lucky enough to avoid getting a job thus far and for incoming freshman, here’s a few tips on deciding how, or if, to go about attaining a job:

• Try to get a campus job. Hamline employers tend to be more flexible with hours and understanding about situations that can come up.

• Be clear about availability. When filling out applications, employers like to see open blocks of time. Putting down a lot of available time doesn’t mean you’ll be scheduled for that many hours.

• Inform employers of your schedule. Let them know ahead of time when finals are and how many hours you will want to work in that period.

• Be aware of your employer’s shortcomings. Larger corporations generally cannot formally accommodate students with time off and scheduling flexibility as much as smaller businesses, though it varies by company.

• Know about Hamline University’s events. Jobs should have as minimal an effect on your college social life and activities as possible, so look ahead to take time off.
