First-year interest varies with Greek life

Staff Writer

Theta Chi fraternity has been experiencing a huge increase in the number of participants in their sponsored activities. According to junior Frank Mahoney, the change is this year’s freshmen.

“I don’t know what they’re putting in the freshmen’s food, but it’s working!” said Mahoney. “The freshmen this year are really energetic and out-going, and the freshmen for the last two or three years have been more passive. If the next two or three freshmen classes are like this year’s, we’ll be on our way to a better Hamline community.”

Theta Chi has no intentions of putting a stop to their activities. As long as they don’t run out of money Theta Chi sponsored activities will continue.

While Theta Chi has had a phenomenal increase in their participants, Delta Tau sorority has not.

Delta Tau has not had many people come to their activities. “I think overall everyone is nervous, they think that if they participate in rushing, they have to join the sorority,” said Junior Jess Guggisberg.

Rush events are free and all Hamline women are invited to attend, regardless of their interest in the sorority.

“There is a really weird stereotype about sororities that isn’t true at all,” said Sophomore Mel Birchem.
“People should come to the activities and meet us before they make stereotypes,” Guggisberg said.

One reason some students don’t join activities is because they are worried about not having enough time in their schedules. Birchem and Guggisberg agree that it is good to be involved in multiple clubs.

“I learned a lot about leadership and how to balance things. Actually, you learn about leadership in every club,” Birchem said.

Guggisberg said, “Always make sure that you plan time for homework if you are involved with activities. Homework is always first.”

Mahoney suggests writing out schedules and to-do lists in a planner.

“I carry a book around with me that has every thing I plan to do or need to do for a week with exact times.” said Mahoney.

Hamline has 67 charted student organizations, according to sheet Kelly Krebs provided the Oracle. Information on the student orgs can be found all around campus at bulletin boards and other posting locations.
