HUSC holds first meeting

HUSC held its first general assembly last Tuesday, Sept. 13. The assembly was set to take place in the GLC lobby instead of the usual meeting place of GLC 100E because of president Hanson’s convocation for faculty and staff, but at 11:15 a.m. the 100E was still empty, so HUSC convened in their regular location.

No new business was brought up at the meeting due to the irregular location, and also because it was the first general assembly of the year.

St. Paul mayoral candidate Chris Coleman spoke during the announcement portion of the meeting. He recognized that the student congress is a non-partisan body and told the assembly that he was not campaigning. Rather, he wanted to remind everyone to get out and vote in the primaries, which took place on Sept. 13.

All attending were reminded that the first-year representative elections would take place on Monday, Sept.
19. Check next week’s Oracle for the full results.

HUSC general assemblies take place every Tuesday during convo hour, which begins at 11:15 in GLC 100E.

Community Week upon us

Starting Sept. 22 and running through Sept. 29, a series of events will take place on campus to celebrate the unversity’s spirit, history and rich diversity.

The annual celebration aims to promote activity among the faculty, staff and students. Social and cultural events such as “Breaking the Ice through Theater” hope to stregthen relationships throughout the community.

Discussions and dialogues will be held to raise awareness and educate members of Hamline through the
“This Is My Story: A Conversation with the Deans” discussion series.

Events like “Classroom Climate and Community: A Forum on Faculty and Student Responsiblity” aim to create a better understanding among faculty and students. In addition, there will be volunteer fairs, reunions, concerts, and many more for the entire month of September.

Interim director named for Couseling and Health Services

Barb Bester is the new interim director of the restructured Counseling and Health Services office. She is taking over for Trish La Plante, who did not return to the university after 10 years in the office’s director.

With Bester in her new position, the office boasts a slew of new faces.

Mark Sudby, who worked as a counselor at the university from 1997-2000, is a licensed psychologist.

Brad Brunick, one of the full-time counselors, is working on his dissertation from Argosy University. Brunwick earned his BA in psychology and sociology from the University of Iowa.

Ling-Hsuan Tung and Becky Rourke are counselors in training. Tung is in the University of Minnesota’s
Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology program. Rourke is in St. Thomas’ Counseling Psychology program.

Jaimie Bennett and Barbara Taylor are joining the office as R.Ns.

“Mental health issues are on the rise,” Bester said. The office now has enough staff to deal with the number of students with mental health issues, Bester said.

Currently, Counseling and Health Services is searching for a fifth counselor, who they are interviewing for this week. The new counselor will work three-quarter time, and will make the final addition to the office.
