Found in the Crowd: Stephanie Weisberg, Sophomore
The first time I met Steph was at an organizational meeting last year held in the Religious Life office. Although the org slowly dissipated throughout the year, Steph’s involvement on campus didn’t. On the very first day of classes I bumped into her right before the showing of “Hitch” on the lawn in front of the Student Center and thought it would be an excellent time to see what she was up to this year. We decided to meet in the Klas Center in that ‘never used area’ by the fireplace with that sweet flat-screen TV and talked about everything from skydiving to morticians.
Lauren Vikander, Oracle: Why did you come to Hamline?
Stephanie Weisberg: Because it’s a liberal arts college, and, as a first-year, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to major in psych or sociology. I decided on psych and Spanish.
O: Why Spanish?
SW: Because I’m from Colombia, so it’s easy, even though I didn’t grow up speaking it.
O: What do you think is your biggest accomplishment in life so far?
SW: Probably getting into college.
O: Where did you go to high school?
SW: Mountain Spark Academy in North St. Paul.
O: What is your biggest passion in life right now?
SW: I’m thinking of going into being a psychologist for kids and specializing in adoption, so working towards that goal.
O: And why adoption?
SW: Because I’m adopted.
O: What’s one of the craziest goals you have for the next 10 years?
SW: Maybe to skydive.
O: What do you think was one of the dumbest things you did when you were younger?
SW: Ahh, [giggle] sat in a bowl of soup.
O: What?
SW: Ummm, yeah.
O: Why did you do that?
SW: I had chicken pox at the time, I wasn’t paying attention and I forgot I put it on the chair and sat in a bowl of hot soup.
O: Must have been quite the case of the chicken pox.
SW: Yep.
O: What is the worst present you’ve ever gotten?
SW: Probably socks, the ugly ones with the little spots for toes.
O: Would you ever get something tattooed on your body?
SW: I have 3 tattoos, yeah.
O: And can I ask you what they are?
SW: Umm, I’ll tell you two.
O: OK.
SW: One is of a heart on my leg. It’s right there. (She pulls up her pant leg to show me). I got it this summer. And the other one is an outline of Colombia with the flag on my back.
O: Is it really big?
SW: No, actually it’s pretty small.
O: What is that song that’s been playing on the radio recently that you find annoying?
SW: I usually listen to my ipod, but there’s some song that’s being played, its like this chipmunk song. I don’t even know what its called but I was a camp counselor this summer so I was forced to listen to Radio Disney, I don’t even know what it’s about but I swear to God there’s chipmunks in it.
O: What is something that you’re not good at, but you wish you were?
SW: Swimming.
O: Ok, why swimming?
SW: I just suck at it. I mean I can swim; I don’t sink, but I don’t know any strokes or anything. I just do a genuine doggy paddle and barely stay afloat.
O: What are some professions you would never try?
SW: Dentistry, I think it’d be really gross. Or a mortician, because I wouldn’t want to deal with dead people.
O: What is a fashion or fad in the past that you’d like to see come back?
SW: Umm, what hasn’t come back?
O: Yeah, good point, Ok, we can skip that one.
O: What is something mean you’d like to do to someone, but never had the guts to do?
SW: Call someone out on something.
O: What is some advice you’d give to an incoming freshman?
SW: Just take advantage of all the little programs that Hamline has to offer and don’t cop out on them. Go and meet people. Don’t stay in your room.
O: Is there anything funny or weird that happened to you last year?
SW: Something funny that happened was when the fire alarms went off in Drew, I just drove home and slept there, cause we’d been standing outside for about half an hour and it was 3 in the morning.
O: What do you have in your pockets right now?
SW: My cell phone and some cigarettes.
O: If there’s one thing that people don’t know about you, what would you want them to know?
SW: At first I would say that I’m laid back, but that’s not me really. I like to have a good time and that’s not always apparent.
