Students Rally for More Than Tolerance
Music played as students gathered for the annual “Not Here” Rally, an event designed to bring Hamline’s diverse student body together in a pact to outlaw ignorance, discrimination, and hate in Hamline’s community.
Sponsored by Commitment to Community (C2C) and part of the FYSEM challenge, new and returning students, faculty, staff, and trustees all attended the event.
President Hanson was first at the microphone, and she began her speech by introducing the theme of “tolerance is not enough,” shown on a sign placed near the seating for the rally. Dr. Hanson emphasized that “hate is probably one of the strongest words in the English language,” but went on to say that the act of omission is a far worse crime.
President of HUSC Shanelle Evens followed Dr. Hanson and said “tolerance is a step forward, but respect, celebration, and inclusion are the goals”.
English professor Mike Reynolds also spoke at the event.
Assistant Chaplain Reverend Tim Tennant-Jayne, quoting an Irish philosopher, said “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.”
Dean of Students Alan Sickbert, senior Alex Pennell, Professor Fahima Aziz and Rich Manke of the Career Development Center were the last of the planned speakers.
After a round of cheers led by junior Matt Thiede, the microphone was opened up to the crowd for comments and calls to action. Associate Dean of Student Affairs Carlos Sneed called the event a success.
